Slugs bugging your hostas? Try 'beer traps'

These slimy gastropods were an especially bad problem in the damp Pacific Northwest, an area that was home to several species of slugs. One of the largest of these creatures, at more than 10 inches long, was a yellow banana slug. In fact, several of the gardening clients of Joy Creek Nursery in Oregon, where I was manager of the landscape division, made sport of hunting these creatures. They kept an extra pair of salad tongs and a cup of salt water handy to pick up and dispose of these garden pests. If you're not into hunting, trapping offers another option for eliminating slugs. These creatures are more fond of beer than hostas, so a small shallow dish or can filled with beer works well....
