Hammer was a plant explorer who searched the world for species that would grow well in our area. He ate, slept and breathed plants. In a 1997 interview at his Lake View Terrace nursery, Hammer told me that he worked from dawn to dusk, seven days a week, and that he had been doing this for 20 years.
